The Marie Curie Research Fellow will focus on the development of a new field probe equipped with a sensor for measurement
of pore-water tension and a benchmark field experiment to validate existing and new sensors. The research is carried out

Main Activities/Responsibilities:
Design, conduct, and interpret experiments to investigate feasibility of pore-water tension measurements under

dynamic conditions
Cooperate with senior staff at the University of Strathclyde and Tecnopenta (SME) to design, test, and evaluate the

penetrometer tip equipped with sensor for pore-water tension measurement
3. Calibrate in the laboratory the instruments provided by Pessl Instruments (SME) for field monitoring
Cooperate with senior staff at the University of Strathclyde and Pessl Instruments to design installation procedure at
4.
the Strathclyde benchmark facilities
5. Install instruments at the site and configure the data acquisition system in cooperation with Pessl Instruments
6. Interpret data and model the groundwater-atmosphere interaction at the Strathclyde benchmark facilities
7. Manage and prioritise own w! orkload within agreed objectives to ensure that all activities are completed to deadlines
Input as a team member to the wider consortium project, attending consortium meetings and presenting research

progress reports
9. Contribute to supervision of MEng and PhD students involved in the research
10. Attend national and international conferences and contribute to research publications in in high quality journals
Person Specification
Educational and/or Professional Qualifications
(E=Essential, i.e. a candidate must meet all essential criteria to be considered for selection, D=Desirable)
E.1 Minimum of 2:1 honours degree in civil engineering.
E.2 PhD (or be near completion) in soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering or a related field
Experience
E.3 Experience in laboratory hydro-mechanical testing of soils
E.4 Experience or training in laboratory testing of soi! ls under unsaturated conditions
D.1 Experience or training in ! sensor electronics
D.2 Experience in field monitoring of geostructures

E.5 Strong background in Civil Engineering
E.6 Ability to deliver international leading research in Soil Mechanics/Geotechnical Engineering
E.7 Evidence of a profile in the form of emerging international research reputation

Probation
