Associate - Rail Business Leader

Location: Glasgow Scotland!

Description: Arup UK is looking of Associate - Rail Business Leader right now, this job will be placed in Scotland. Detailed specification about this job opportunity please give attention to these descriptions. Arup is a firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world. As a wholly independent organization, we are owned in trust for the benefit of our employees and their dependents: with no shareholders or external investors we determine our own business priorities and direction.

We are seeking an experienced senior rail professional to lead our Glasgow Rail team and continue growing our market share across Scotland through excellent leadership an! d strategy combined with a client focused high-quality expert ! approach.. Our Rail business is somewhat unique: whereas many of our competitors and contractors focus on narrow ‘functional silos’ we have a joined-up, holistic approach that focuses on meeting our client’s needs by forming multi-disciplinary teams, each member of which has a deep specialism in their respective areas.

Rail is an area of continued growth and investment for Arup, representing our largest strategic business area and now accounts for a significant proportion of Arup’s Global Infrastructure turnover. Based in our Glasgow office, your expertise within the Rail sector will be invaluable in ensuring the continued success and growth of our business both locally and globally.

Our Glasgow office was established in 1967 in the heart of the City Centre, and today enjoys a team of over 60 staff, working across all sectors, in a modern, open-plan layout. Locally we see huge potential in rail and our other businesses, and firmly believe we will d! ouble in size over the coming decade. The strong leadership and relationship building skills you will exhibit will be instrumental in ensuring this growth is achieved successfully, whilst your technical and commercial skills will ensure that the projects we undertake are innovative and managed to achieve successful outcomes.
In short, this is a unique opportunity and would suit an individual who relishes the responsibility, opportunity and challenges inherent in growing and leading a complex specialist design engineering business to achieve its full potential. Your expertise and leadership will be absolutely essential in ensuring that Arup’s Scottish Rail business continues to thrive by leading it in an insightful, innovative, collegiate and inclusive manner.
Role
Reporting to the Infrastructure Director for Scotland and North East, you will be a key member of the leadership team in Scotland as well as the focal point for all Rail activity in the sub-region. A! s a leader, you will be expected to make operational, management, leader! ship and tactical commercial decisions that will not only have a direct effect on all aspects of the office, but also on your peers, colleagues, clients and the wider Arup UK MEA Rail Business. As a senior individual, you will also have the opportunity to work closely with the UK MEA Infrastructure Leadership team to assist in shaping and to deliver the wider strategy at a local strategic and operational level.

We work on a wide range of multi-disciplinary projects, frequently spanning heavy rail, light rail and metros as well as the supporting infrastructure for each of these and more. Whilst historically these projects have been orientated towards Scotland or the North East, we see both this role and our portfolio continuing to grow and broaden by concerted actions with other regions to win work elsewhere within the UK or overseas. Under the right leadership, there is significant potential for this and furthermore we may capitalize upon continued success and grow! th by building specialist Rail discipline-specific teams at a local level: this and the overall future success of the Rail business in Scotland will depend upon your actions and leadership.

Your workload will be highly varied, demanding and interesting and hence enthusiasm and adaptability are important; one day may find you meeting with new clients, another working with a peer in another region to create a joint bid, followed up by providing technical and project oversight to less-experienced colleagues in conjunction with commercial and leadership oversight.

While your technical expertise will be excellent given the time you will have spent working on Rail projects in a design engineering environment, your management, leadership, influencing and interpersonal skills will be highly developed and utilised in a focused, reflective and inclusive solution-orientated approach. This will ensure that not only do you come to be highly regarded within the Arup UK ! MEA Rail business and that peers and colleagues alike will seek your gu! idance and support on matters technical, operational and strategic alike, but also that you build a strong ‘family’ or ‘team’ atmosphere within the business and sub-region as a whole and act as a credible, powerful ambassador for Arup in Rail bo th in Scotland and across the UKMEA Region as a whole.
